Getting started
How do I start using the PayPal Reader?
Follow the instructions on the card reader packaging or read more here.
Charging the battery
Charging via the PayPal Reader Dock
My reader is in place, but the battery won't charge.
Make sure the card reader dock is properly connected to the power adapter with the USB-C cable included in the card reader packaging. The cable needs to be plugged into the dock and the power adapter.
Please note that the PayPal Reader can only be used with the matching PayPal Reader Dock. If it still does not work, check that the cable is not damaged or try a different cable.
Over time, dirt can accumulate and prevent charging. Clean the five small gold-coloured rings on the back of the PayPal Reader and Dock gently with a soft brush or cloth and alcohol. Do not use metal objects - this can damage the tiles.
A charging indicator next to the charging port on your card reader lights up when the reader is charging:
- Red = charging in progress.
- Green = charging complete.
Charging via USB-C cable
My reader is connected with a USB-C cable but does not charge.
Check that the USB-C cable is properly connected to your card reader and to either the USB power adapter or your computer.
A charging indicator next to the charging port on your card reader lights up when the reader is charging. Red = charging in progress. Green = charging complete.
Power on/off

Resetting your PayPal Reader
In some cases, for example when the reader displays error messages (e.g. "Resetting monitoring device" or "BLE8XX"), we recommend initiating a reset:
- On your PayPal Reader, press and hold the “power button + number key 9” simultaneously
for five seconds. - “Please wait” will appear on the screen of your PayPal Reader, followed by a long beep.
- Once the message has disappeared, the PayPal Reader will have been reset.
- The QR code will be displayed on the reader’s screen again, after reset, indicating that the reader needs to be paired to device.
If your issue is not resolved, please contact our support team for help.
Pairing
I have purchased a new PayPal Reader. How do I pair it with my phone or tablet?
In this article you will find information on how to pair your reader. You can also read through the manual that came in the box.
˘I have paired the reader with my device but it won't connect. What should I do?
If you are using a Bluetooth connection, make sure the device has Bluetooth turned on and that your reader is within 15 meters. Open the Zettle by PayPal app and go to Settings > Card Reader to see the connection status or try to connect again.
If you are using a wired USB-C connection, make sure the cable is properly plugged into the reader and the device (refer here for the connection options and how to set them up).
Is it possible to pair a PayPal Reader with several devices?
You can connect your reader to several devices, but NOT use them at the same time. If you have paired multiple devices with your reader and several of these devices have an active Zettle by PayPal app running, this may lead to disruptions in the functionality of the reader.
Taking payments
My PayPal Reader is on, but I'm having trouble accepting payments.
Check that the card reader is connected to your device. You do this by going to Settings > Card reader in the Zettle by PayPal app. If you cannot see the card reader there, you may need to connect it again.
Also check that the software is up to date in both the reader and the app. You can read more in this article.
Software update
Try to always keep your Zettle by PayPal app and card reader up to date:
- Update the app by going to the App Store or Google Play on your device.
- Update the software in your card reader, then go to Settings > Card Reader. Find the reader to be updated in the list and press "Update card reader".
- Do not close or exit the Zettle by PayPal app while the update is in progress.
How do I know if there is a new update available?
If you want to see what version of the software you have installed, or if you just want to know if there is an update available, you can always go to "Settings" > "Card Reader" in the Zettle by PayPal app and select your card reader by pressing that.
Sleep mode
When my PayPal Reader runs on battery it seems to shut down after some minutes.
This is completely normal and nothing to worry about, as it goes into sleep mode to save battery. It will be activated again when you receive a payment. You can also wake it up by pressing the power button or via the app.
Management
Do I need to take care of my PayPal Reader in any special way?
Handle your reader with care! The PayPal Reader has an internal protection mechanism that is very sensitive. If it is subjected to strong shocks or falls from higher heights, the message "Reader Damaged" may be displayed.
I won't be using the reader for a few months. Do I need to think about anything in particular?
If you know that you will not be using your PayPal Reader in the next few months (more than 3 months), we strongly recommend that you charge the reader before putting it away.
I haven't used my PayPal Reader in a few months and now it shows the error message "Reader Damaged".
